April celebrated South Asian artists and creatives with a programme curated by Chila. 

 

PROGRAMME 

DJ Sets Curated by HUNGAMA

Experience HUNGAMA (Hindi for ‘Chaos’ & ‘Lit’) founded by Ryan Lanji. Described as London’s alternative Bollywood club night and Studio 54, HUNGAMA is a space for the Queer South Asian Community to express their individuality and creativity under dizzying disco lights.

 

Neon Drama by Chila Kumari Singh Burman

Lighting up the Turbine Hall DJ sets will be a series of Chila's signature neon works, which draw inspiration from identity, memory, and South Asian mythology.

 

Music by Indian Ocean Sound System

Ashok Burman (aka DJ Ash) brings the sounds of the Indian Ocean Sound System to the Terrace Bar, from 1970’s Indian Filmi tunes to Bhangra, Indian Soca and Chutney music.

 

Zine Making Workshop with Zindabad Zine

Cut, stick and create your own takeaway zine with Zindabad, a London and Oxford-based zine for anyone who identifies with the term ‘diaspora’, founded by Cia Mangat.

 

Film Screenings by Chila Kumari Singh Burman

Drop by for a special screening Candy Pop and Juicy Lucy, Kamla and Dada and the Punjabi Princess.

Making Workshop with WEIRDO

Feeling creative? Join the WEIRDO team to make your own badges and patches inspired by punk. Explore their zines, prints and see their mini exhibition featuring photos of South Asian people in alternative subcultures. WEIRDO is a zine and platform documenting the experiences and perspectives of South Asian people in the alternative scene, using ‘alternative’ as an umbrella term for subcultures such as punk and goth.

 

Beyond Bollywood Talk

Join presenter Noreen Khan, artist Seema Mattu and researcher Dr. Darragh O'Donoghue as they discuss Bollywood and its influence on their creative practice. This discussion will be chaired by Dr. Kulraj Phullar.
